The United Nations welcomes a report calling for addressing the roots of sectarian violence in Arakan, Myanmar

The United Nations welcomed the report of the Comprehensive Advisory Committee on the State of Arakan in Myanmar, which emphasizes issues relating to identity and citizenship and calls for freedom of movement for all people as well as the need to address the root causes of violence and reduce inter-communal violence.

“We look forward to reviewing the report’s recommendations,” United Nations spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said at the daily press conference. At the same time, we would like to acknowledge once again the importance of the establishment of the Government of this Committee and the importance of its mandate in analyzing the situation of all communities in Arakan and formulating recommendations for conflict prevention, reconciliation, institution-building and long-term development, as well as humanitarian services. To support the Government’s implementation of recommendations to improve the situation of all communities in Arakan State.
