At least 33 people were killed and 36 others injured today, Monday, in an airstrike carried out by the Myanmar military near a market in the town of Kyauktaw in Arakan State.
According to Reuters, aid worker Wai Hun Aung said the site of the airstrike was far from areas of fighting and that the area had no connection to the conflict.
Myanmar has been experiencing a civil war since the military overthrew the government in a coup in 2021, with armed groups fighting the Myanmar military on multiple fronts across the country.
The Kyauktaw airstrike is among the deadliest aerial attacks in Arakan State recently, following an airstrike that hit a hospital in the west of the state last December, killing at least 30 people.
The United Nations recently said in a report that the Myanmar military had carried out deliberate airstrikes targeting civilians, after gathering evidence from about 1,600 sources, including testimony from 750 witnesses and satellite imagery.
The report also said that the military escalation had intensified alongside elections completed by the military last January, with new tactics including drones and powered paragliders being used to make it more difficult for civilians to flee.
