The Republic of Korea has provided a $5 million contribution to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide essential food assistance and support nutrition and education for more than 462,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
WFP said the new Korean funding will support the second phase of the REACH initiative (Responding with Emergency Assistance for Conflict-affected Households), one of the flagship humanitarian initiatives of South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, implemented in cooperation with WFP.
The humanitarian support aims to enable Rohingya families to meet their basic needs with dignity, from providing nutritious food for mothers to school meals that ensure children regularly attend learning centres inside the camps.
The contribution builds on South Korea’s continuing humanitarian efforts to support the Rohingya in Bangladesh in cooperation with UN agencies. South Korea has previously provided millions of dollars in assistance to purchase rice shipments, provide alternative cooking fuel, and improve healthcare and nutrition for the most vulnerable refugee groups in the Cox’s Bazar camps and on Bhasan Char island.
Bangladesh hosts around 1.2 million Rohingya living in harsh humanitarian conditions in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, after fleeing Myanmar following a campaign of violence against them that UN and international reports have described as amounting to “genocide.”
