European Union foreign ministers have agreed to prepare sanctions against generals in Myanmar over the persecution of the country’s Rohingya Muslims.

In a statement, the EU foreıgn ministers called for “strict measures to impose restrictions on senior officers of the armed forces of Myanmar who are responsible for serious and systematic violations of human rights without any further delay.”

EU foreign ministers at a previous meeting last week asked the High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Ms. Federica Mujerini to prepare a list of people whose assets would be frozen and would be barred from entering the European Union.

In addition, European ministers are seeking to tighten the Myanmar arms embargo, which has been in place since the 1990s.

This comes amid news of the discovery of mass graves in the wake of possible ethnic cleansing in Arakan state in southwest Myanmar, home to the Muslims of Rohingya. The United States and Canada have imposed sanctions on Myanmar military officials on charges of human rights violations.
