The Tanmiah Charitable Association has signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support healthcare services for approximately 15,000 Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar camps in Bangladesh.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Social Affairs and several humanitarian organizations, who emphasized the importance of strengthening joint efforts to support refugees.
The Association’s Chairman, Nasser Al-Ajmi, stated that the agreement represents the continuation of a humanitarian partnership that began in 2019, aiming to improve access to clean water, healthcare, education, and food assistance. He noted that nearly 500,000 refugees have benefited from this partnership over the past five years.
Al-Ajmi added that this year’s efforts focus primarily on healthcare, in coordination with UNHCR, praising the effective management of the camps and the fair distribution of aid.
For her part, Nisreen Rubaian, UNHCR Representative in Kuwait, indicated that the agreement includes the provision of medical supplies, essential medicines, and vaccination campaigns. She affirmed that the initiative comes within the framework of joint humanitarian efforts that have continued since 2020.
Meanwhile, Abdulmohsen Al-Mukheil, an official from the Ministry of Social Affairs, welcomed the initiative, commending Kuwait’s leading role in humanitarian work and stressing the importance of cooperation with international organizations to enhance its global standing.
Bangladesh currently hosts around 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar camps, which the United Nations classifies as the world’s largest refugee settlement. The refugees have been living under dire humanitarian conditions since fleeing Myanmar in 2017 due to the “genocidal campaign” carried out by the Myanmar military against them.
New waves of displacement to Bangladesh have continued since November 2023, following the outbreak of renewed fighting in Arakan State between the Myanmar military and Buddhist Arakanese militias (the Arakan Army).
