Heavy floods have swept through the news central market in Buthidaung in Arkan, western Myanmar, destroying it and causing great damage.
The Arakan News Agency (ANA) reporter explained that the destruction of the market in Nanrakan village deprived the Rohingya in Buthidaung and Mungdaw of their main food source, as they used to buy goods traders brought from the market.
Children in Mungdaw are prone now to malnutrition due to lack of foods and hiking prices. floods submerged the market totally and destroyed all goods stored inside it, causing great difficulties for communities in Mungdaw and Buthidaung.
On May 17, 2024, the Arakan Army confiscated all the properties of Rohingya community from the municipal market in Buthidaung, burning it down. In Nov 2025, the AA built a new market under the new bridge in Nanrakan village.
In recent days, five villages in Kyauktaw Township and several others in Tongok Township have been submerged by floodwaters, destroying farmland and homes, blocking roads, and causing extensive property damage.
Arakan State has been experiencing heavy rains and flooding since May 26, submerging Rohingya homes and lands in Maungdaw Township. Meteorological authorities expect the heavy rainfall to continue in Arakan State in the coming period.
