All of them are reportedly in Cox’s Bazar working with different international aid and donor organizations
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained 11 foreign nationals while they were reportedly attempting to enter a Rohingya refugee camp at Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar.
They were held from near the relief center adjacent to Ukhiya Degree College around 12pm on Friday, said RAB 7 Company Commander Maj Md Ruhul Amin.
None of them had their passports with them when they were approached and asked what they were doing there, RAB officials said. Later, they were handed over to Ukhiya police station for further questioning.
Some locals, however, told the Dhaka Tribune that these foreigners were in Cox’s Bazar working with different international aid and donor organizations. But official confirmation was yet to follow.
Two of the detainees are British citizens, two others Italians, and one each from the Netherlands, Turkey, South Korea, Genoa, Brazil, and Norway.
However, the foreigners reportedly told RAB officials that their passports were kept in their Dhaka offices before they started for Cox’s Bazar.
Maj Ruhul said they would investigate the matter more.
Confirming the foreigners’ hand over to them, Ukhiya police OC Md Abul Khayer said: “They are undergoing preliminary questioning.”
“We have also informed the high officials about this,” said Abul. “Necessary steps will be taken following orders from the higher-ups.”
