Indian authorities on Wednesday authorized state governments in the country to expel and deport Rohingya refugees after months of debate between Hindu and Muslim nationalists.
According to The Times of India, Rajia Sabha or the Supreme Council of the Indian Parliament has issued detailed instructions for the deportation of nearly 40,000 Rohingyas living illegally in the country.
In a written response to Rajia Sabha’s question, Minister of State for Internal Affairs Mr.Kiren Rijiju said that “the authorities concerned are authorized to deport foreign nationals who are illegally residing in the country under article 3 (2) (c) of the Aliens Act of 1946” States to identify and deport these refugees.
“The central government has instructed state governments to set up a provincial-level task force to identify and deport illegal foreign nationals,” he said.
A senior interior ministry official said an estimated 40,000 Rohingya refugees had fled Myanmar and had crossed into India.
