Uzbekistan on last Wednesday called on the government of Myanmar to stop the violence and “pursue peaceful ways” to put an end to the worsening Rohingya crisis in the western province of Arakan.
In a statement issued by the Uzbekistani Foreign Ministry expressed the concern of the Government of Myanmar about the deterioration of the situation in Myanmar, stressing the escalating violence against the Muslim minority.
“We call upon the Government of Myanmar to stop the violence against innocent Muslims, to prevent acts of violence and to take all necessary measures to resolve the problem peacefully.”
They pointed out that “Uzbekistan condemns all forms of violations, based on the principles contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights set by the United Nations, as well as the objectives and missions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.”
The Uzbek government pledged humanitarian aid to the needs of Rohingya Muslims, who numbered 400,000 in neighboring Bangladesh, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Since August 25th, the Myanmar army and Buddhist militias have committed genocide against the Rohingya Muslims in Arakan.
It should be noted that the Security Council meeting on the crisis is taken place, at the request of Britain and Sweden, amid growing concern over ongoing violence.
The Security Council held closed meetings late last August to discuss violence in Arakan, but without an official statement.
There is no clear statistics on the victims of the genocide, but a human rights activist in Arakan told Anadolu that they had spotted 7,500 people dead and at least 6000 wounded from Rohingya since the start of the genocide campaign until September 6th.
