A delegation from the Turkish Parliament, headed by Turkish Ambassador Akif Yılmaz, arrived this morning at the Rohingya refugee camps in the Cox’s Bazar area of Bangladesh to review humanitarian aid activities and follow up on efforts to support the refugees.
The delegation praised the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) for its effective coordination in delivering humanitarian assistance, expressing appreciation to the Government of Bangladesh for hosting the refugees and providing them with necessary support.
During a meeting with RRRC officials, the Turkish delegation reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation and to strengthening the long-term partnership between Turkey and Bangladesh in the field of humanitarian aid. The RRRC, in turn, reaffirmed its support for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees, while commending Turkey’s ongoing cooperation and contribution to enhancing humanitarian relief efforts in the region.
Previously, Bangladesh’s Acting Foreign Affairs Adviser Towhid Hossain and Chief Adviser for Information and Broadcasting Mahfuz Alam expressed their hope for Turkey’s support in facilitating the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar. The Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh had earlier pledged that his country would work jointly with the Bangladeshi government at the international level to help resolve the Rohingya crisis.
Bangladesh currently hosts more than one million Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar camps, which the United Nations classifies as the largest refugee settlement in the world. The refugees have been living under harsh humanitarian conditions since fleeing Myanmar in 2017 following the genocidal campaign carried out by the Myanmar military, with renewed waves of displacement since November 2023, when fighting broke out in Rakhine State between the Myanmar army and Arakan Buddhist militias (the Arakan Army).
