The situation in Bangladesh’s Rohingya camps has deteriorated as aid workers scramble to build shelters before the monsoon season, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.

Steve McMadro, head of emergency operations in the region, said his clinics were expanding to combat cholera outbreaks and other water-borne diseases, which are feared this month’s rains.

He said in an interview today that desperation had grown among Rohingya Muslims who had fled a military campaign last August in Myanmar’s Arakan state and that many saw little chance of return.
