Britain called on Myanmar Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi to use her influence to stop abuses against the Muslim minority of Rohingya.
Britain’s Minister for International Development, Preetti Patal, told a parliamentary hearing in the House of Commons that Suu Kyi has to provide security for the Myanmar Muslim minority and allow their return to homes in Arakan state, where they fled from violence and killings.
“The international community should increase its efforts to pressure Aung San Suu Kyi to exercise its powers and powers to stop violations against Rohingya,” she said, saying the Myanmar leader has a role and authority to govern her country.
“The leader of Myanmar has a voice and we want to hear her voice calling for a cessation of violence,” Patal said. “This is not only the role of Britain but the role of the world as a whole.”
More than half a million Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh to escape the violence unleashed by the army and Buddhist militias since last August that have killed thousands.
