Bangladeshi security forces arrested a Rohingya leader during an incursion into a refugee camp, police said Tuesday, as tension over plans to repatriate displaced Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar grows.
Muhibullah, in the Cox-Bazar region, organized a protest against the controversial resettlement agreement signed by Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Police chief Abu al-Khair told AFP on Tuesday that Muhibullah had been handed over to the security forces he was still holding for questioning, and two more Rohingyas were arrested for their role in the protests, another officer said.
Bangladesh was due to begin a massive operation to repatriate hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Tuesday after agreeing to a two-year timetable with Myanmar but postponed because of what the Bangladeshi authorities said was due to incomplete logistical support.
