BUTTERWORTH: As Muslims celebrated the end of the fasting month, a Rohingya migrant in Malaysia spoke of his sadness over what was happening to his community in Myanmar.…
Noor Muhammad Aung Than, 39, said he felt sad every time he thought of friends and family who were living under a military junta which does not recognise them as citizens.
He said he could only offer prayers that God will have mercy on them as he could not do anything here for them.
“The only thing I can do now is to pray for them,” the father-of-two told theSun when met recently.
Noor Muhamad has been staying in Malaysia since 2003 and earns his living teaching the Quran to Rohingya children at the Maahad Al-Arkan Li Tahfiz in Butterworth.
His school (Maahad) is located behind a shoplot of a popular shopping mall and also doubles up as a coffee shop for income.
He told theSun he used to charge RM50 per student but now receives whatever is given as most of the 48 children come from poor families.
“Most of the Rohingya children here have parents who work in the construction sector.
The school teaches the Quran as well as the Malay and English languages and was set up in April 2014 with the help of donations.
