The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has condemned human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and has expressed regrets that the Myanmar government has not cooperated with the UN Special Rapporteur, Saudi Press Agency said on Wednesday night.

This came in a speech before the Human Rights Council delivered by the Head of Human Rights Section of the Permanent Delegation of the Kingdom to the United Nations office in Geneva, Dr. Fahd Bin Obaidallah Al-Mutairi.

The Kingdom called upon the Government of Myanmar to allow the Special Rapporteur to enter the country and provide security for all affected areas.

Al-Mutairi said the series of displacement and violations of the Rohingya minority continue despite international resolutions calling on the government of Myanmar to create the necessary conditions to end these violations, stop the displacement of the Rohingya minority and facilitate their return to their country.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in early June 2018 with the Government of Myanmar is a positive step toward resolving this crisis and a prelude to the voluntary, safe and dignified return of the refugees, he said.

He called on the Government of Myanmar to begin effectively implementing this memorandum and to end the suffering of hundreds of thousands of refugees, noting that the issue of the Muslim minority in Myanmar was a priority issue for the Kingdom.

He also called on the international community to intensify its efforts to stop what appears to be a systematic ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims.
