Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Abul Hassan Mahmud Ali, said on Monday that his country would not resort to “suicide solution”, such as engaging in a war against Myanmar, to resolve the crisis of the Muslim Rohingya minority.
Since August 25th, the Myanmar army and Buddhist militias have committed genocide against the Rohingya in Arakan province, killing nearly 7,000 people, according to the Arakan Rohingya National Organization.
The massive violations have pushed another 515,000 people into neighboring Bangladesh, according to the United Nations.
“Dhaka wants a peaceful solution based on the diplomatic efforts of the Rohingya crisis,” according to the media in particular.
“Why do we have to commit suicide and enter into a war? We do not want that. We want peace, so why should we destroy our efforts for development?” He asked.
He cited the experience of other countries on the war, saying that “the war caused the destruction of both Syria and Iraq.”
Bangladesh was a “model of development, compared to a number of other countries, even developed ones.”
“The entire international community supports Bangladesh in its attitude towards the Rohingya crisis,” he said.
The Bangladeshi Foreign Minister met in Dhaka on 2nd October with the envoy of the State Counselor of Myanmar, Kyaw Tint Su, where he discussed diplomatic means of repatriating the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
