China and Myanmar vow to enhance friendship

China and Myanmar on Saturday vowed to strengthen the close traditional friendship and friendly cooperation between the two countries and push them forward in the new era.

The pledge was made during a meeting between State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Myanmar Vice President U Henry Van Theo.

The Chinese state councilor said the two countries have a strong traditional friendship, adding that the leaders of the two countries have maintained close contacts.

China is determined to cooperate with Myanmar to implement the consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries, to promote mutually beneficial cooperation and to proceed with the construction of major projects within the framework of the Road and Road Initiative, including the China-Myanmar economic corridor, he said.

China strongly supports Myanmar’s efforts to maintain stability, revive the economy and improve people’s livelihood, Wang said, stressing that China will continue to provide assistance to Myanmar as much as it can.

Wang said China hopes Myanmar can properly handle issues in the northern part of the country and maintain peace and stability in the border areas between the two countries.

Vice President U-Henry Van Theo said that Myanmar is determined to uphold traditional friendship and friendly cooperation between the two countries and to continue to play an active role in building the road and road initiative.

The vice president also expressed his gratitude for China’s support for peace and Myanmar’s national reconciliation process, while pledging continued efforts and cooperation with China to maintain peace in the border areas between the two countries.

Vice President Wang briefed the latest developments on the Arakan case. Wang said China always believes that the issue should only be resolved through friendly consultations between Myanmar and Bangladesh and that the international community should play a constructive role in promoting the resolution of the issue.
