One man was killed early on Wednesday during an armed clash between rival groups inside a Rohingya refugee camp in Teknaf, southeastern Bangladesh, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred inside the Nayapara Rohingya camp under Hnila Union, where the victim was found with gunshot wounds near the bKash junction area inside the camp.
Police later identified the victim as Abdur Rahim, 40, who was locally known by the alias “Raiykhya.”
According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Ajkaler Khobor, Abdur Rahim was believed to be a member of an armed group known as the Salman Shah group, which has been active inside the camp for a long period.
Local residents said they discovered his body while leaving their shelters for dawn prayers and immediately informed the authorities.
Following the report, members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), along with officers from Teknaf Model Police Station, arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
Residents of the camp said the killing was likely linked to internal disputes and power struggles among armed criminal groups operating inside the camp.
Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said police launched an investigation after receiving the information, noting that initial findings suggest the incident resulted from internal conflict between rival groups. He confirmed that legal proceedings are ongoing.
Rohingya camps in the Teknaf and Cox’s Bazar areas continue to face growing security challenges amid severe overcrowding and the absence of clear legal protection frameworks for refugees.
In recent years, Bangladeshi authorities have recorded repeated incidents linked to armed gangs and criminal networks inside some camps, including killings, extortion, and drug trafficking.
Observers warn that the spread of weapons and internal rivalries among competing groups further undermine security and place civilians—including women and children—at increasing risk, prompting renewed calls for tighter security measures and stronger protection for refugees inside the camps.
