The World Food Program (WFP) has appealed to donor countries on Sunday to provide $ 75 million in emergency aid over the next six months to help ease the suffering of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Myanmar, a mainly Buddhist country, since Aug. 25, increasing pressure on aid agencies in neighboring Bangladesh.
“This is a miserable situation,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley told reporters after visiting refugee camps in Bangladesh near the Myanmar border. “We need 75 million dollars for the next six months.”
“I say we can end hunger in the world with a few billion dollars and tell donors if you can not give us the money, stop the wars.”
The United Nations is currently seeking to raise $ 200 million from donors to fund efforts to address the crisis of the Rohingya Muslims.
