The Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling on the Government of Myanmar to eliminate institutional and methodological discrimination against the Rohingya Muslims and other religious and ethnic minorities in the country, address the root causes of discrimination, eliminate statelessness and review the 1982 Citizenship Act, which deprived minorities of their civil and political rights, Ensuring equality in full citizenship, as well as the repeal of all discriminatory legislation, including laws on the protection of race and religion enacted in 2015.
The resolution also adopted a moratorium on restrictions on the freedom of movement of minorities, including Rohingya Muslims, to allow civil registry services, education, health care and voluntary repatriation to their places of origin with safety and dignity.
The resolution called upon the Government of Myanmar, including the security forces, to ensure the rule of law and democracy, to bring all State institutions, including the army under civil administration, to recognize all ethnic and religious minorities and to integrate them into the political process and to promote democratic transition.
