“The conditions are still not valid for the return of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Arakan province,” said the United Nations.
The organization stressed that the return should be “safe, voluntary and dignified.”
The spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said at a press conference at the permanent headquarters of the International Organization in New York.
On June 6, the Myanmar government signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which would allow the two UN agencies to engage in the repatriation process for the Rohingya refugees.
According to media reports, the agreement does not provide for a framework of cooperation between the two sides aimed at creating the conditions for a voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees.
The agreement does not contain a specific time-frame and does not address the question of Myanmar’s deprivation of citizenship to Rohingya.
