The Voice of America newspaper blamed the Myanmar military for the murder of a prominent Muslim lawyer last January as he left Yangon airport.
The authorities have vowed to prosecute the perpetrators of the assassination of prominent lawyer U Ko Ni and arrested four suspects and then held a rare press conference on the investigation and said that “extreme patriotism” is the motive for the killing because they feel “dissatisfied” with the political work of the victim.
The newspaper reported that there were big questions looming on the horizon six months after the assassination because the mastermind was still at large, raising concerns about whether justice would take place in the case.
“The basic question that many ask is:” Do the police really want to find any additional perpetrators? “Said Phil Robertson, deputy director of Asia at Human Rights Watch. “The situation will get worse if nothing is done urgently.”
While no one is accused of direct involvement, the issue raises uncomfortable questions for the military, the newspaper said.
Ko Ni was not only a prominent lawyer, but also a prominent member of the country’s Muslim community, which has been increasingly troubled in recent years in Myanmar with a Buddhist majority. Many people believe that being a Muslim played a part in his assassination.
