Flooding swept through large parts of Myanmar and displaced more than 10,000 people, killing two people and flooding a Buddhist temple due to severe erosion of two river banks, residents and state media said on Monday.
A disaster relief official said the water level had risen steadily since heavy monsoon rains began in central Myanmar in early July, prompting some to resort to highlands or Buddhist monasteries.
“The situation is under control, but what is going on now will depend on the weather,” Ko Ko Naing, director-general of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, told Reuters.
“We are ready to support flood-hit areas because floods occur every year.”
He said the government provided food and other assistance to the displaced population of 11,687 people and provided permanent shelter to people living in areas where flood waters are not expected to recede soon.
The New World of Myanmar newspaper said pictures of the Buddha’s foot were attracting visitors to the Buddhist temple in the flooded area of Magway.
it also added that a small dam collapsed in the Pago area.
