The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday announced its readiness to receive more people from Myanmar fleeing their country to Bangladesh.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said in a media statement that UNHCR is cooperating with Bangladesh authorities to set up a transit center to prepare for the absorption of a sudden increase in the number of people fleeing from (Myanmar).
Edwards quoted Bangladesh Border Guard sources as saying that more than 11,000 Myanmar refugees crossed by road on Monday to southeast Bangladesh through several points, with an average daily crossing of 2,000 people last week.
“Many of these new refugees came from the Buthidaung district of Arakan province in Myanmar,” he said.

He pointed out that the refugees are telling terrifying stories about their journey from the fires and killing, while others fled for fear of the expected outbreak of violence, including those who had to walk for up to 14 days.
“Many of the refugees were carrying children and baskets containing everything they could carry in a limited amount of time. Many women and children were unable to swim. They had to ride on the backs of those who could swim as male volunteers while some used plastic bags and tarpaulins. As temporary tools to float on the surface of the water. “
