The Rohingya issue was a major part of the first session of a religious diplomatic conference held in Washington, DC, with the participation of the Director General of the Arakan Rohingya Union (ARU) Professor Wakar Uddin bin Masihuddin.
In a statement to the Arakan news agency, Wakar Uddin said the Rohingya issue dominated the first session of the conference, which was led by senior adviser to the American Institute for Peace and former US ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Derek Mitchell.
The attendees discussed the dimensions of the Rohingya issue and looked for the root causes of religious intolerance, violence and instability in Arakan State and strategies to achieve communal harmony in Myanmar.
Participants concluded the importance of the participation of youth groups from Buddhist, Muslim and Christian communities in promoting inter-communal relations, educational opportunities for all communities and initiatives to reduce hate speech in Myanmar.
