Myanmar’s authorities confirmed on Monday that one person had died of a swine flu infection near its northwestern border with India.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement that one person died and 13 patients were examined this month in the state of Chin and commercial capital Yangon.
The statement came after an emergency meeting in the political capital Naypyidaw on Monday following news spread late on Tuesday that 16 people had died of swine flu in the country.
Authorities have issued a health warning in the country requiring people suffering from seasonal fever to stay away from public gatherings.
The first case of swine flu in December 2009 caused a global pandemic, according to the World Health Organization.
