The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign, Political and Security Affairs, European Commission (EU) Vice President Federica Mogherini and all European foreign ministers on Saturday urged them to take further measures to end the violence against Myanmar’s Muslim minority.
The message was sent at an important time as the EU focused on Myanmar and the plight of the Rohingya. The European Parliament’s upcoming session on Rohingya and the participation of Mogherini and EU foreign ministers at the Euro-Asian Ministerial Meeting in Myanmar Last November.
“The EU is an influential global player with the ability to change the situation on the ground and bring other countries to pressure the Myanmar army,” the letter said. “The EU can also impose further sanctions on Myanmar military leaders responsible for human rights abuses.”
The message stressed the need for the EU to work with the wider international community, including those neighboring Myanmar, to ensure that the UN fact-finding mission is allowed into the country to allow evidence of human rights violations to be collected in a neutral manner. “
“Despite the many meetings held by the European Union, it has not done enough, and the High Representative should continue to condemn the continuing violence against the Rohingya,” the letter says.
According to the United Nations, the minority of the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar is one of the most oppressed societies in the world.
The European Rohingya Council, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is an organization of European human rights activists in Myanmar.
