Continuous heavy rainfall on Friday triggered severe flooding in northern Maungdaw, a town in Arakan State, western Myanmar, submerging 90% of agricultural lands and causing major damage to homes in Rohingya populated villages.

According to local sources, the villages of Thayet Oat, Mingala Gyi, and Pawnzar home to many Rohingya were among the worst affected. Floodwaters inundated numerous houses and destroyed crops, with rice paddies suffering extensive damage.
Local residents told Arakan News Agency that food supplies in many homes had become unfit for consumption due to water contamination, and agricultural seeds were also ruined.
Several affected Rohingya individuals said, “We urgently need food, seeds, and medical care,” adding that the situation continues to deteriorate without any effective response from the authorities.
Recently, the heavy rains in Maungdaw, Arakan State, led to the flooding of villages, schools, and roads. Two women also drowned after being swept away by the floodwaters.
Arakan State has been facing intense rain and flooding since May 26, which has submerged Rohingya homes and farmland in Maungdaw. In June, several towns across Arakan, including Kyauktaw, also experienced massive floods due to the relentless rainfall.
