The second-ranking U.S. diplomat has discussed with Myanmar’s parliament speaker elections due this fall and Washington’s concerns over legislation that could discriminate against minorities.

Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met Monday with speaker Shwe Mann, who was a top figure in the former ruling junta and is vying to become the next president of Myanmar.

The State Department said they discussed the importance of credible elections and constitutional reform, and Blinken raised concerns over four draft bills on protecting race and religion. Critics say the legislation would discriminate against Rohingya Muslims in the predominantly Buddhist country.

Blinken also asked for a transparent and independent investigation into the use of force against protesters.

Shwe Mann is leading a parliamentary delegation on a U.S. visit, and has also met congressional leaders.
