The Myanmar army has sacked one of its officials who led an operation in Arakan province that has caused more than 700,000 Rohingya minority Muslims to flee to neighboring Bangladesh after the European Union imposed sanctions on seven senior military officials.
The military said in a statement quoted by the network “CNN” US on Tuesday that the dismissal of Maj. Gen. “Maung Maung Soe” due to weak performance in response to armed attacks launched in the north of the country, without mentioning more details in this regard.
The European Union on Monday announced the imposition of new sanctions on seven senior military officials in Myanmar “for their involvement or links to the atrocities and serious human rights violations committed against the Muslims of Rohingya in Arakan state in the second half of 2017.
