On the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day, Rohingya refugees in Indonesia have made an appeal to the international community to secure their basic needs and provide a dignified life after more than two years of living in temporary tents without proper housing, education, or healthcare.
In a statement, the refugees noted that they are survivors of the genocide perpetrated by the Myanmar government. However, they continue to face difficult conditions in Indonesia, living in insecure tents and watching their children grow up without security or future opportunities.
They have called for decent housing to preserve their dignity and protection, alongside humanitarian support and funding from the United Nations, international organizations, and the global community to secure food, clean water, healthcare, and education. They also emphasized the need for legal protection and freedom of movement to build a safe and sustainable future.
The refugees affirmed that humanitarian aid is not charity, but an inherent human right, urging the world not to forget them and to stand with them for humanity, dignity, and justice.
Previously, Rohingya refugees in the Pekanbaru camp in Indonesia issued an urgent appeal to the international community and the United Nations on World Refugee Day, June 20, demanding immediate protection, action against human trafficking, and the provision of educational opportunities and dignified living conditions.
The Rohingya live in host countries under harsh humanitarian conditions, suffering from poverty and overcrowding in fragile camps made of bamboo and fabric, in addition to a lack of healthcare services, education, and security.
