An 8-year-old Rohingya boy, Ziaur Rahman, went missing on Sunday evening after falling from a bamboo bridge in Camp 6 of the refugee settlements in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Search operations are still underway as of now.

Eyewitnesses told Arakan News Agency that the missing child was a second-grade student at the Modern Education Community School. He had left home to bring food for his father, who works as a shopkeeper inside the camp.

They added that while returning, his foot slipped and he fell from the bridge. Rescue teams, aided by local residents, are continuing the search around the area, while his family remains in deep distress.

The incident has sparked sadness and sympathy among the camp residents, especially since Ziaur is known for his good character and intelligence. He is the eldest son of Nur Kashim and Sehena Begum.

Bangladesh currently hosts over one million Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar camps—recognized by the United Nations as the largest refugee settlement in the world. Most fled from Myanmar in 2017 following a genocidal campaign launched by the Myanmar military. The situation worsened again after renewed fighting broke out between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) in November 2023, leading to further violence, displacement, and forced conscription of Rohingya civilians.
