A 13-year-old Rohingya boy has died after suffering an electric shock on Bhasan Char Island in Bangladesh, where thousands of Rohingya refugees relocated from the Cox’s Bazar camps are currently living.
The incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. when the boy, Nurul Amin, son of Abdur Rohim and Romana Begum, was collecting winged beans near a state electricity line, according to local sources.
Sources told Arakan News Agency that Nurul Amin came into contact with an electric power source, resulting in severe injuries. Despite attempts to assist him, he later died due to the intensity of the electric shock.
The incident has caused deep grief among the child’s family and the Rohingya community on the island, while local residents renewed concerns over the safety risks facing refugees, particularly children, in displacement areas.
Community members have called for stricter safety measures and improved infrastructure standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
More than one million Rohingya refugees have been living in camps in Cox’s Bazar since fleeing Arakan State in 2017, following a military campaign by Myanmar’s military junta, amid stalled repatriation efforts and declining international humanitarian funding.
Bangladeshi authorities relocated thousands of Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char Island as part of a plan to ease overcrowding in the Cox’s Bazar camps. However, human rights groups and local residents have repeatedly raised concerns over safety conditions, infrastructure, and basic services on the island, particularly regarding child protection.
