The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that the country has received 8 Rohingya refugees who arrived in the capital, Manila, last Thursday as part of the “Complementary Pathways” program, which aims to provide higher education opportunities for refugees.

The department stated that the eight refugees will pursue their university studies at several Philippine universities, with full support provided to them, including covering tuition fees and living expenses by donors from the private sector.

In a post on Platform X, the department confirmed that the program continues Manila’s long-standing tradition of offering refuge and solidarity support to refugees, noting that the Philippines will host them until the completion of their studies, without disclosing details about their residence or the universities they will attend for security reasons.

The Complementary Pathways program is a joint effort between the Philippine government, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and academic partners, including Columban College, De La Salle Araneta University, San Beda University, Saint Louis University, Tarlac State University, and De La Salle University.

According to the department, the Philippines currently hosts 25 Rohingya refugees within this program, including 6 who arrived in 2022, 8 in 2023, 1 in 2024, and an additional 10 refugees during 2025 so far.
