Religious tensions rose again in Myanmar after masked and nationalist assailants led by Buddhist monks attacked Muslim youths in Mandalay city.
The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning when a group of about 30 people armed with sticks and swords entered the Muslim-majority Sakya Nwe Sin neighborhood in the former royal capital, Mandalay, according to a resident.
A local administrator said two young Muslim men were injured, but authorities insisted the incident was not sectarian.
“It was just a battle among the young,” said police chief Maung Htai. However, residents of Mandalay told Reuters the incident raised fears of a repeat of the deadly sectarian violence that hit the same neighborhood in 2014.
