The Myanmar army chief called on those displaced by the violence in Arakan to return to their homes and rebuild their villages without addressing the 422,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled to Bangladesh to escape military operations by their army.

In an address to Arakan on his first visit to the region since the outbreak of the conflict, General Min Aung Hlaing said the military was handling the situation as best as possible despite international criticism and condemnation and accusations of genocide against the Rohingya.

The United Nations said: The reaction of the army is an ethnic cleansing aimed at expelling Rohingya outside the country with a majority of Buddhism.
