Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union, Dr. Wakar Uddin joined the Foreign Ministers Conference as the Rohingya representative to OIC.
In the inaugural speech, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina passionately spoke on the Rohingya crisis, including the traumatized community’s immense suffering, Bangladesh’s tremendous efforts to cope with the multitude of challenges in taking care of over 1.1 million Rohingya in camps, the urgent needs for speedy repatriation by the Government of Myanmar to their homeland in Arakan, and many other humanitarian and human right issues.
The Prime Minister stressed that all forms of support and solidarity with the Rohingya people must come from the OIC and its 57 OIC member countries and beyond, and was very pleased that an overwhelming numbers of countries and communities around the world, regardless of their religious faith, race, and national identity, are providing all forms of support for the Rohingya people. OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen spoke similarly on the crisis.
The Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland echoed the statements by the Prime Minister Hasina and Secretary General Dr. Othaimeen. Foreign Minister Freeland further stressed the importance of application of international jurisprudence on crime against humanity committed against Rohingya men, women, and children in Arakan. Other speakers include Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Abul Hassan Mahmud Ali, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Mehmet Şimşek, Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Adel al-Jubeir, and other dignitaries.
The OIC-CFM chairmanship has been passed from incumbent Cote d’Ivoire to Bangladesh during the inaugural ceremony.
