The Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar hosted a delegation of 28 Additional Directors from Bangladesh Bank in a specialized briefing and training session on managing the Rohingya refugee crisis and the ongoing humanitarian response in the world’s largest refugee settlement.

During the session, RRRC officials provided detailed explanations of operational and humanitarian mechanisms, as well as coordination frameworks among different agencies, in addition to the ongoing challenges of camp management and addressing the growing needs of the refugees.

Officials noted that more than eight years have passed since the mass displacement of Rohingya from Myanmar’s Arakan State, yet nearly one million refugees still live in overcrowded and fragile shelters in Cox’s Bazar, deprived of their basic rights amid continuing violence and persecution in their homeland.

The RRRC emphasized the importance of engaging national institutions and future leaders in understanding the crisis, praising the active participation and genuine interest of the Bangladesh Bank delegation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the office reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with government entities and humanitarian partners to ensure a more effective and sustainable management of the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Bangladesh currently hosts around 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar camps, which the United Nations recognizes as the largest refugee settlement in the world. The refugees have been living in difficult humanitarian conditions since fleeing Myanmar in 2017 due to the “genocide” campaign carried out by the Myanmar military. Waves of displacement to Bangladesh have continued, including most recently following clashes in Arakan State in November 2023 between the Myanmar army and the Buddhist Arakan militias (Arakan Army).
