A new batch of Rohingya refugees arrived in Bangladesh on Tuesday to escape repression and detention in Arakan, Myanmar.
Arakan news agency quoted scenes from the arrival of five families and said they had just arrived from the city of Buthidaung despite the agreement signed between the two countries on the repatriation of refugees.
“We thought we could stay in the country because we did not do anything and we did not violate government regulations,” said Mohammed Rashid, a refugee. “I was working as a pharmacist in the village of Lamba Bil, and yet the government was telling the authorities to arrest and torture us. “We have ties and contacts with the Buddhists, but the government is inciting and saying we are accused of terrorism,” he said.
Another refugee said information leaked in the village reported that detainees were severely tortured in prisons and officials were pouring boiled water over their bodies.
