A 19-year-old Rohingya man was killed after being stabbed multiple times inside a Rohingya camp in Balapur area of Hyderabad, southern India, during the early hours of Wednesday, local police said.

The victim, identified as Murshid Alam, worked as a rag picker and was living in one of the Rohingya camps in the city. Indian police registered a murder case under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the accused, Abdullah Mohammed, a member of the same community, and took him into custody for investigation.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the incident occurred following a drunken altercation between the two young men, which escalated into a fatal stabbing.

According to police records, this incident marks the ninth murder reported in Hyderabad and its neighboring municipalities since the beginning of December.

In his complaint to the police, the victim’s father, Islam Noor, said that the family arrived in India around 12 years ago after fleeing Myanmar. The family consists of the parents, four sons, and two daughters, and has been living at Camp-29 in Royal Colony since their arrival.

He stated that at around 1:30 a.m., a resident from a nearby camp informed the family that Murshid had been stabbed by 21-year-old Abdullah, who lives in another nearby camp. Family members rushed to the scene and found Murshid lying on the road, bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds.

A Balapur police official said that local residents alerted the police and emergency services. However, ambulance staff declared the victim dead at the scene, after which the body was transferred to the morgue of Osmania General Hospital.

Following the post-mortem examination, police confirmed that Murshid had suffered 19 stab injuries to various parts of his body, including the throat, chest, back, abdomen, and hands. Investigators reiterated that the killing occurred after an argument while both individuals were under the influence of alcohol.

Police investigations are ongoing as the incident raises renewed concerns over security and protection conditions within Rohingya refugee settlements in India.

Thousands of Rohingya refugees have been living in India for years after fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar. Many reside in informal camps and settlements, facing poverty, limited access to basic services, and lack of legal protection.

A large number of refugees depend on unstable and informal jobs, increasing their vulnerability to insecurity and community violence. The killing has intensified calls from rights advocates for stronger protection measures, improved security, and enhanced social support for Rohingya refugees across India.
