Activists at Camp 13 for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh announced that they are working in cooperation with the Self-Development Initiative (SDI) to open a center for teaching Arabic to women in the camp.

They told Arakan News Agency that the project aims to provide safe educational opportunities for women inside the camp, especially since their educational options are limited.

They pointed out that the center will remain open all day until night, closing one day a week, and that students will be allowed to return to their homes only on Fridays to ensure regular attendance.

The project comes as part of the Self-Development Initiative’s efforts to develop education in the camp, where the organization already operates an office at the same location.

Residents confirmed that the opening of the center represents an important step toward enhancing educational opportunities for women under the difficult conditions inside the camp.

Bangladesh hosts approximately 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in the “Cox’s Bazar” camps, which the United Nations classifies as the largest refugee camp in the world. Refugees there have lived in difficult humanitarian conditions since fleeing Myanmar in 2017 due to the “genocide” campaign carried out by the Myanmar military against them. Waves of displacement to Bangladesh have continued since fighting broke out in Rakhine State between the Myanmar army and Buddhist Arakan militias (Arakan Army) in November 2023.
