About half a million Rohingya children in Bangladeshi refugee camps are seeking to find their parents after having been forced to flee the persecution of Myanmar’s army and extremist Buddhist militias.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that “the majority of those fleeing the province of Arakan in western Myanmar to Bangladesh of children, amounting to about half a million children.”
“A large proportion of children are either orphans or have lost their families during their trip to Bangladesh,” an activist said.
The 8-year-old girl, Soufara, had recently arrived at Kotobalong camp, carrying her sister in her small arms, Jikara, crying out: “The soldiers killed my family.”
“The soldiers of the Myanmar army raided their village in Arakan and killed his brother Jaafar,” said Kabir Ahmed, another helpless Rohingya victim.
He added that the wife of his murdered brother gave birth and could not escape the persecution of the army.
He pointed out that his brother’s wife had disappeared as she fled Buddhist militias.
According to Save the Children, some children have taken refuge in their relatives or neighbors.
