The United Nations on Wednesday called on Myanmar authorities to facilitate humanitarian access to Rohingya Muslims in Arakan province, including monitoring the human rights situation in the province.
This came in a statement made by the spokesman of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, “Stephane Dujarric” told reporters at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
“We want more access to humanitarian organizations to Rakhine (Arakan / western Myanmar), including monitoring the human rights situation,” Dujarric said.
According to United Nations figures, about 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar to Bangladesh following a crackdown launched by the security forces on 25 August 2017, which the United Nations and the United States called “ethnic cleansing”.
As a result of these attacks, at least 9,000 Rohingya people were killed, as of 24 September 2017, according to the international organization Doctors Without Borders.
In turn, the United Nations documented the widespread mass rape of Myanmar security personnel, killings also targeting infants and young children from the Rohingya minority, as well as involvement in brutal beatings and disappearances.
UN investigators have described the abuses as “crimes against humanity”.
