The organized destruction of Rohingya villages confirms what was said by the United Nations that this Muslim minority was being ethnically cleansed, said the Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi.
This came in Al-Otaibi’s statement to KUNA Wednesday, after a delegation from the UN Security Council concluded its visit to Bangladesh and Myanmar to view the Rohingya refugees’ situation.
This visit reflects the international community’s concern over the crisis of the Rohingya, Al-Otaibi said, as he expressed deep concern over the continued crossing of Rohingya into Bangladesh due to violence and hunger.
Al-Otaibi said that during the visit, the Security Council had met with the Government of Myanmar, adding that the delegation urged them to create right environment for safe return to refugees and the other minorities.
The Security Council received assurances from officials in the Government of Myanmar that they are working to implement bilateral agreements with the Government of Bangladesh for the return of refugees to their areas, he added.
Al-Otaibi had urged the government of Myanmar to address the causes of the Rohingya crisis and stressed the need to allow the entry of humanitarian organizations and the UN into the Arakan State without restrictions and promote the freedom of religion and peaceful living.
The council would continue to follow up the implementation of its presidential statement issued on November 2017 and the recommendations of the Arakan State Advisory Committee headed by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Kuwait, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Peru led the Security Council on a field visit to Bangladesh and Myanmar, to meet with officials from both countries and to keep a close eye on the situation of 700,000 refugees.
Since Kuwait entry into the Security Council earlier this year as non-permanent member, it has been working to defend Arab and Islamic issues.
