France on Monday welcomed the appointment of Switzerland’s Christine Schraner Burgener as the special envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Myanmar, wishing her success and expressing support for her in her new tasks.
The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Christine Schraner Burgener, who has been Switzerland’s ambassador to Germany since 2015, has considerable diplomatic experience, especially in Asia, where she led the mediation efforts following the events of 2010 in Thailand, where she represented her country as ambassador.
She reiterated that Paris renewed its call to stop violence against the civilian population and called on the Myanmar security forces to ensure their protection and the safe and unhindered return of humanitarian aid.
It also stresses the need to work without delay to create the conditions for ensuring the return of Rwandan refugees to their homes in a dignified, voluntary, secure and lasting manner and reiterates their support for the United Nations as the United Nations Security Council currently performs a mission in Bangladesh.
France also reaffirmed its support for humanitarian organizations working on the ground and the need for a sustainable political solution to put an end to the violence and the current humanitarian crisis
