France on Monday called for an end to violence against Myanmar’s civilian population, demanding that they be protected, safe and unhindered.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that France renewed its support for the work of the United Nations and the Security Council in Bangladesh and Myanmar as well as the work of humanitarian organizations in the field.

The statement stressed the need to find a lasting political solution to end the violence and the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.

The statement welcomed the appointment of Swiss diplomat Christine Schraner Burgener as a UN special envoy to Myanmar, stressing that she has extensive diplomatic experience, particularly in Asia, where she led the mediation efforts following the 2010 events in Thailand.
