Bangladeshi minister briefs OIC chief on Rohingya crisis

A six-member Bangladesh delegation led by Bangladesh’s Minister of Shipping Shajahan Khan, M.P., met with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen, here on Monday.

Minister Khan was also accompanied by Shahriar Alam, State Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation briefed the secretary general and other high officials of the OIC secretariat on the latest position of Bangladesh on Rohingya crisis and the thousands of refugees taking shelter in Bangladesh.

The delegation appreciated the role of the international community toward the Rohingya issue and focused on the five-point solution proposed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina which was placed in the United Nations General Assembly.

The delegation appraised the secretary general on the recent visit of a senior minister from Myanmar to Bangladesh and the visit of Bangladesh’s home minister to Myanmar.

The delegation said since August this year, 6,20,000 displaced Burmese people have taken shelter in Bangladesh as per IOM statistics and the total now stands at over one million refugees including unregistered 3,00,000.

In response, Dr. Al-Othaimeen said the OIC contact group’s fact-finding team will visit Cox’s Bazar this week. He also assured that OIC will always be with Bangladesh on the issue of Rohingya.

Minister Khan sought support of the OIC member states for the candidature of Bangladesh in the Category-B election of the IMO to be held in London in the first week of November.

The secretary general reassured OIC support in all international election that Bangladesh will participate. The OIC will ask all member states to extend support to Bangladesh, Dr. Al-Othaimeen said.
