Local sources reported on Thursday that the body of a Rohingya man was found after he went missing during a fishing trip in Maungdaw Township, northern Arakan State.

According to Maungdaw Daily News, the deceased was identified as Amir Hussain, a resident of Kayin Tan Ward in Maungdaw town and the son of Dr. Diloo, also known as Dil Mohammad.

Sources said that Amir Hussain left his home on the morning of January 1 to go fishing in a creek near Pantawpyin village, close to a checkpoint operated by Arakan militias between Kayin Tan Ward and Pantawpyin village.

When he failed to return home at the expected time, family members began searching for him. His body was later found floating in the creek, local residents said.

Accounts from local residents differed regarding the circumstances of his death. Some suspected that he may have been killed, while others believed the incident could have been the result of an accidental drowning.

No official authority has so far issued a statement confirming the cause of death or clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Maungdaw Township in northern Arakan State continues to face complex security and humanitarian conditions amid ongoing military tensions and the absence of transparent investigation mechanisms into incidents affecting civilians, particularly members of the Rohingya community.

In such cases, doubts frequently surround the causes of death due to movement restrictions, the presence of checkpoints, and limited access to independent information, deepening fear and anxiety among local residents.
