A Rohingya man died after a series of torture by government forces in the prison of Buthidaung City in Arakan State.
According to Rohingya activists, the 65-year-old Rohingya man was arrested along with four others in June on unclear charges and was imprisoned in Buthidaung City, where he was subjected to a series of arbitrary tortures for past six months before he was taken to the city hospital on Wednesday with sporadic injuries, internal and external.
Several days ago, Rohingyas reported that the man died of his injuries at the hospital.
The Rohingya man’s family said they knew by chance that their relative had died in hospital and authorities had handed over his body to the people of a neighboring village while a curfew had been imposed in the state and to prevent movement between villages to maintain security, according to the authorities.
The man’s family said they had not yet been able to carry out his funeral because of the curfew and was unable to take a last look at him.
The Government of Myanmar in Arakan State has killed Rohingya Muslims under torture or direct killing in their detention camps, and there have also been many instances in which authorities have removed the internal organs of the patients before the bodies have been delivered to their families.
Since Aug. 25, Myanmar forces have launched a campaign against Rohingya Muslims in Arakan province and intensified operations in the cities of Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Rathidaung, and more than 650,000 people have fled to Bangladesh.
