Buddhist officials used Rohingya clerics to implement a plan they had put to insult and extort money from Rohingya students in Buthidaung, Arakan State, western Myanmar.

A local source told Arakan news agency that Buddhist officials in the towns of Buthindaung, Arakan City imposed fines for no reason ona group of preachers and students from the Rohingya, Mawloi Karimullah, Mawloi Noor Mohammed, Mawlawi Nour al-Haq, Mawlawi Hussein Jowhar, Nur al-Amin, Mawloi Salim, Mawlawi Ali Jowhar and Mawlawi Hamid Hussein, stressing that the financial fine ranged from 100 thousand to 200 thousand Myanmar kyat for each of them.

The source explained that two of the victims were severely beaten for failing to pay the financial fine, pointing out that officials mock them saying: “Go and file a complaint to the police they will not do anything because this is not your country and you are intruders here.”
